Business and Economics

  • Hrvatska narodna banka

    In Croatian or English. This is the site of the Croatian National Bank. Here can be found general information about the bank and its policies as well as press releases going back to 1997, a list of banks in Croatia with contact information and URL's if available, and full text of various Croatian banking laws. Also available here are a wide variety of the Bank's publications in English and Croatian and some financial data for Croatia. This site uses frames.


  • Zagreb Stock Exchange

    Mostly in English. This site contains general information about the Exchange, trading statistics, texts of some financial legislation, the Croatian shares index and information about the members of the Exchange.

    Culture

  • Muzicki informativni centar

    In Croatian or English, but more is available in Croatian. This is the site of the Croatian Music Information Center founded in 1971. Here can be found a wealth of information about music in Croatia. There is a directory/database of contact information, URL's and for some even descriptions of musical organizations, events, and individuals such as critics, composers and artists. The database is attempting to compile catalogs of works for composers. There is also a catalog of bibliographic citations for musical compositions and written works about music such as reviews, articles, obituaries of musical figures, etc. Currently under construction is a list of music-related links and a music news section.

    Educational Institutions

    Search engines and directories are often very effective tools for finding sites in this category. Try searching for universities, colleges, schools, education, etc. Below is an example of how the gateway WWW.hr compiled these sites into a helpful list of Croatian universities organized by city.

  • Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts

    In Croatian. The English version of this site has very little information. This site provides information for the Academy, its institutes, and its members. Biographies and bibliographies are available for some members. There are also a calendar of events and information on Academy publications.

  • Croatian Universities

    In Croatian and English. This is a list of links to university sites in Croatia generated by the gateway WWW.hr.

    Genealogy

    One of the best web sites for Eastern European genealogy is the FEEFHS (Federation of East European Family History Societies) which is described in our General Resources section. Be sure to consult their section on Croatia. Cyndi's List is large general genealogy site that includes information on East European countries. Regardless of what genealogy site you use, don't ignore any sections that pertain to Former Yugoslavia.

    In English. This site gives general instructions, tips on reference books, and even sample letters to archives to help the genealogist interested in Croatia. Issues of their newsletter and links to related sites are also available here. The pages are meant to be informational only so no one person or organization is noted as the creator of the site.


    Government and Law

  • Croatian Bureau of Statistics

    In Croatian or English, but a bit more information in the Croatian version. Here can be found statistical data on Croatia ranging from population and employment statistics to agricultural and industrial figures. Most of the data is from the year 2000. There is also a list of statistical offices at the zupanija level and details about the Bureau's publications.

  • Croatian National Parliament

    In Croatian. Some in English. Includes links to informational sites on the history of the Parliament. There are also a variety of links to documents in English including the text of the constitution and various laws relating to the functioning of the Parliament and the election of its representatives. Information in Croatian is far more extensive with a wide variety of links to government agencies. The text of Narodne novine is available here going back to 1990, but it is difficult to use due to the number of frames on the site.


  • HIDRA - Croatian Information Documentation Referral Agency

    In English (after the first page) and Croatian. This site contains bibliographic information on government publications of all sorts. There are title, subject, and corporate body indexes for the publications. Other information is also available here such as election results, descriptions of political parties, and a brief history of the government.

  • Croatian President's Office Home Page

    In English and Croatian. There are texts of his speeches in both languages, information about his advisors, and other documents concerning the office of the president.

  • Vlada Republike Hrvatske

    In English and Croatian. This is the official web site of the Croatian government. It includes links to ministries and other government bodies and documents such as the constitution, press releases, and government sessions. The site uses java and has irritating small frames in the center of the page.

    Language and Literature

  • Croatian National Corpus

    In English and Croatian. The Croatian National Corpus is a linguistic project that gathers and digitizes a massive about of material in the Croatian language to enable research on various topics. The results of a search will not provide a complete text, but rather an excerpt from the text showing how the word is used. Besides the corpus of contemporary Croatian, the site also includes one for classic texts and ones for the works of Gundulic and Marulic. The search component requires Croatian fonts and can be extremely slow. There is also a link to the Croatian e-text project that provides links to literary information and actual e-texts of Croatian literature. Some of the links are to texts of translations into English. In spite of the number of bad links, there is still a lot of information here.

    Libraries and Archives

    Most Croatian search engines and directories will generate lists of libraries. Try the term knjiznice. Information on archives often appears on genealogy sites since genealogists make extensive use of archival documents in their research. Try the Croatian Genealogy section on this page.

  • Nacionalna i sveucilisna knjiznica

    In Croatian. This is the site of the Croatian National Library. Descriptions of their collections and contact information, as well as links to university sites in Croatia can all be found here. This site provides access to their library catalog (CROLIST) which has two interfaces, one in Croatian and one in English. Diacritics are not necessary to search the catalog. The catalog also contains analytics for articles in addition to citations for monographs and periodicals.

    In Croatian. This is the site of the Croatian State Archives. There is general information about the archives and their collections, but little else. The pages are clearly in their initial stages of development.

    In English. This is a list of scanned maps produced by the Map Collection at the University of Texas at Austin.

    For links to 17 newspapers published in Croatia check out Paperboy. Search by country. Search engines and directories are often very effective tools for finding sites in this category. Try searching for media, news, newspapers, magazines, journals, agencies, radio, television etc. Below under Media Links is an example of how one gateway compiled these sites into a helpful list.

    In Croatian or English. This is a 24 hour Croatian news service. A directory of categories such as sports, culture, politics, etc. allows the user to select stories just in his/her area of interest.

    In Croatian or English. This Croatian directory has many language interfaces. Searches can be performed for individuals or companies and with or without Croatian diacritics. There is also a listing of towns located in each zupanija. The site is by Croatian Telecom.

    In Croatian or English. Searches can be performed for individuals or companies and with or without Croatian diacritics. It is not as easy to use as the directory listed above because towns are not listed. The user himself must supply the town. The site is by VIPme.

    Women's Issues

    There are many sites in Croatia related to women's issues. Check out the links provided under Croatia at the NEWW site which is described on our General Resources page. Due to the war in former Yugoslavia there is also much information to be found concerning Croatian women on sites devoted to Bosnia and the Balkan situation in general.

    In Croatian or English, but there is more information on the Croatian version of the page. This is the site of the Women's Information and Documentation Center in Zagreb which promotes and supports women's organizations in Croatia and disseminates information helpful to women. The site contains information about the Infoteka, its library and its publications. Of particular interest is an address book of Croatian women's organizations with contact information, links to web pages if applicable and a summary of each organizations interests and activities. This address book is only available in the Croatian version.

    In Croatian or English. This is an on-line magazine devoted to women's issues in Croatia. This site is rich in information. It includes an archive of back issues on such hot topics as "women and the internet" and "women and the media". There is also a good list of Croatian women's organizations with information about their activities and interests.
